Local and live
What Cambridge yards are up against
Cambridge sits on Highway 401 beside the Highway 8 junction, and much of its freight starts in its factories. The City of Cambridge says advanced manufacturing accounts for nearly 20% of its workforce, across robotics and automation, automotive, aerospace and nuclear suppliers. Those plants rely on carriers, warehouses and trailer drops close by. Among them is iPort Cambridge, a logistics and industrial campus on Intermarket Road and Allendale Road planned at 300 acres and over 4 million square feet, about five minutes from the 401.
Waterloo Regional Police say Cambridge's recent run of scrap metal and wire thefts has mostly happened overnight and on weekends in industrial and construction areas, particularly in the north end and Galt. Thieves took copper wiring, scrap metal, tools and wiring removed from heating and cooling systems, hitting construction sites, commercial properties under renovation and power equipment stores. Loaded trailers are targets as well: on December 29, 2025, a tractor trailer with cargo was stolen from a business in Cambridge, the same day three transport trucks were taken from a business in neighbouring North Dumfries.
Those are the hours when most yards sit empty. Sigma's live agents watch Cambridge sites 24/7, 365 days a year, and AI person and vehicle detection brings any movement on the property to an agent's attention. If someone is there who shouldn't be, the agent talks them down live through the site's speakers and calls police if they stay. Every incident is saved as video evidence with a written report for police, your insurer or your own records.
On the record: Between February 4 and May 30, 2026, Waterloo Regional Police investigated 38 incidents involving scrap metal or wire thefts across Cambridge, mostly overnight and on weekends in industrial and construction areas. Source: Waterloo Regional Police Service, 2026
