At the Pharr-Reynosa produce bridge

The Pharr-Reynosa International Bridge, operated by the city of Pharr, is the country's busiest bridge for fresh produce, carrying close to 215,000 truckloads of fruit and vegetables a year within an overall 1.2 to 1.3 million trucks, according to a May 2026 report; manufactured goods made up about 75 percent of cargo value and produce about 18 percent. A $150 million expansion adding FAST lanes for pre-cleared carriers was more than 90 percent complete as of that report and expected to open by mid-2026, nearly doubling the bridge's capacity. Interstate 2/US 83 crosses the city east to west, and US 281 and I-69C run north from the bridge toward Edinburg, carrying refrigerated trailers to the cold-storage and distribution yards built up around them.

Produce and machinery sitting in an open yard overnight are still a target in a city built around moving them quickly. Pharr police asked for the public's help after thieves took a tractor, a trailer and attachments worth more than $40,000 total overnight on July 11-12, 2021, from a site in the city. FBI data for 2024 separately counted 137 burglaries and 83 motor vehicle thefts in Pharr, equal to about 170 and 103 per 100,000 residents. A cold-storage dock or a trailer lot left unattended overnight carries that same exposure.
